After two years, Shawmila has ended. The relationship many thought would last an eternity has officially broken up. But why?
The couple met in 2014, when Camilia Cabello was still in Fifth Harmony and Shawn Mendes was just learning to play the guitar. The pair became friends instantaneously. During their five years of friendship, they created critically acclaimed songs and show stopping stage performances. The most notable was their chart-smashing duet, "Señorita." With lyrics like, “Cause you know it's been a long time coming,” it was no surprise fans started speculating that the singers were dating. Mendes and Cabello made their relationship official in the summer of 2019 when Cabello posted a pic on Mendes’ birthday saying “I love you” with three heart emojis. In addition, their steamy September 2019 VMAs performance, which shocked everyone with their romantic tension, confirmed any deniers in Shawmila.
“When they [the media] saw the relationship, they started to believe in love, and I can say the same,” said senior Tesna Cherian.

The remainder of 2019 was spent getting all the PDA from both parties. Both lovers gushed about their affection for one another everywhere. Even during the pandemic in 2020, the couple quarantined together. Around this time, Mendes mentioned in his documentary on Netflix how all of his new songs were about her. The cuteness overload of this couple was unbearable at times. While many fans speculated that marriage was in their future, some wondered if their love was too good to be true.
In November 2021, Shawmila ended. Announcing their breakup via Instagram, the couple wrote, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.” Fans and haters of their relationship alike were in shock.
“I supported it because it seemed like there was a purpose. They were serious about each other. I was shocked. I didn’t think they would ever break up. How sad,” said senior Tesna Cherian.
As the chapter on their relationship closes, fans wonder what is next for the singers.
“As much as I’m going to miss this iconic couple, I think it’s important that we consider their privacy and respect their choice. I honestly have so much respect for them as musical artists and can’t wait to see what great things they move on to next,” said freshman Emilin George.
Even though their “summer of love” has ended, fans continue to love the singers and support them through any hardships and heartbreak.
