Valorant Varsity Athletes

By David Ren

The end of a season for many athletes is a joyous time where players can reflect on their achievements. However, for many senior athletes, it is their last time playing sports at New Hyde Park.

Throughout the seasons, NHP athletes made countless achievements at the conference and county levels, totaling thirteen All-County awards, three All-County Honorable Mention awards, twelve All-Conference awards and one All-League award. These athletes and NHP’s Scholar Athletes, who had to maintain a rigorous GPA while playing a varsity sport, were distinguished at an award ceremony on March 15.

“There’s something special about putting on a Gladiator uniform, focusing on a common goal and working for it with others—your teammates, your friends. That captured the essence of New Hyde Park athletics this fall and winter season. I'm so proud of all the individual and team success that our teams have had this year. Go Gladiators!” NHP Athletic Director Mr. Maguire said.

For the winter season, boys basketball player senior Arsh Singh was distinguished as an All-County athlete, while seniors Sireen Brown, Amal Kayani, and Isaiah Lariosa were recognized as All-Conference athletes. Girls basketball players senior Meghan Korzevinski and freshman Ava Orbon were distinguished as All-County Athletes, while seniors Grace Tumulty and Jessica Vieni were recognized as All-Conference athletes. Senior Riley Griffin was also recognized as a scholar-athlete.

Regarding district teams, riflery shooter senior Daniella Canning was distinguished as an All-County athlete, while sophomore Alex Tiwari and senior Samantha Chang were recognized as All-Conference athletes. In addition, wrestler junior Jake Rodgers was distinguished as an All-County athlete.

The fall and winter sports seasons were followed by Varsity Sports Awards Night, an event where students were honored as a team for their achievements and hard work as athletes. There was a slideshow presentation that displayed pictures of the teams and the names of high-ranking athletes. The coaches gave speeches about their teams and their recognizable players. They personally handed out awards to commemorate athletes who displayed character and sportsmanship, while being an asset to their teams.

“Although no athlete really works super hard in their sport for an award, it is really nice to be commended for dedication and skill. Being on the varsity team for three years was definitely a rewarding experience that brought me many friends from different grade levels. Getting closer with my coach over three years was also something I’ll always be grateful for,” varsity volleyball player Lauren DiGregorio said.

The New Hyde Park teams this fall and winter evidently had many accomplishments. Students and community members alike anticipate the spring season and the successes to come.
