Physics Teacher by Day, MLB Pro by Night: The Double Life of Mr. Testa

By Arjit Nair

In the convoluted halls of New Hyde Park Memorial High School, students struggle to explain the puzzling paradox that is physics teacher, Mr. Testa. Mr. Testa has profound knowledge surrounding the language of the universe– physics. Beyond his exhilarating personality is the strangest double life that could rival the most surprising plot twists one can think of.

By day, Mr. Testa teaches Kinematics, Newton’s Laws, Energy, Magnetism, and Waves, but by night, he becomes the biggest star on the diamond, a member of none other than the legendary exhibition baseball team, The Savannah Bananas. While most teachers spend their evenings grading papers or watching Netflix, preparing for the next day, Mr. Testa puts on his bright yellow baseball uniform, wears a banana-shaped hat, and becomes the heart and soul of the Savannah Bananas.

“The yellow jerseys and banana-shaped hat fits Mr. Testa’s personality is perfect,” Junior Destiny Gillespie said. “It looks like I might have to ask him to show off his skills in the classroom.”

Mr. Testa's energetic nature and athletic ability make him a perfect fit for the Savannah Bananas.

Mr. Testa’s interactive style of teaching doesn’t come from old textbooks but from his experiences on the field. His intricate understanding of how objects move comes from years of throwing baseballs accurately across the field; knowledge of energy conservation comes from swinging the bat with a lot of force; and understanding of momentum and inertia comes from slides into home plate and celebrating with victory dances.

“I always knew that Testa could bust out some moves,” junior Alex Tomalski said. “Figuring out that he’s living a double life as a teacher and Savannah Bananas player is both hilarious and surprising. It all makes sense now, his outgoing energy during lessons comes from the singing and dancing between plays on the field. His knowledge of physics comes from hitting and throwing. I just may have to consider living this life in the future.”
