By Evyn Roliz

The Chariot placed in four categories at the 2024 Adelphi Press Day Awards. In addition to an exciting first-place win in the Best Visual Category, The Chariot received a third-place award in Best Layout, an Honorable Mention in Best Sports Story or Column, and an Honorable Mention in Best News Article.

“I’m really proud of everybody on this paper’s staff… we’ve all worked so hard and I’m really proud that our accomplishments were able to be shown,” staff writer Carmela Drossman-Schlossberg said.

The Chariot Staff gathers to celebrate their awards after months of thoughtfully piecing together each issue.

Throughout the year, The Chariot staff has dedicated numerous hours to the publication. All students attending Press Day got the opportunity to hear from a keynote speaker, listen to a panel of experienced journalists and attend workshops. Staff members were thrilled about The Chariot’s recognition at the awards ceremony.

“I’m really glad that we got the results that we got, especially because I have worked so hard since the beginning of the year taking photos, trying to go out of my way to get the best shot possible,” Editor-in-Chief Linda Cheung said.

Cheung was awarded first place in the Best Visual category for her photo spread of New Hyde Park Memorial’s football team at the 2024 Playoff Semifinals.

“I was really excited and surprised because I really wasn’t expecting anything crazy to happen. Hearing my name being called was the most surprising experience,” Cheung said.

Both editors-in-chief were awarded third place in the Best Layout category for The Chariot’s website design.

“[Fiona O’Reilly] does basically everything with layout… so really, that was her award more than anything!” Cheung said.

All staff were inspired by the other school newspapers that were showcased. Editors and writers alike began to brainstorm ideas for The Chariot going forward.

“After speaking to other student journalists at Press Day, I did come up with some new ideas for The Chariot, especially utilizing multimedia in our coverage of school events… in order to add more power to student journalism,” news editor Darsh Mirchandani said.
